Astrobotic was selected by NASA to develop and deliver an autonomous rover to the moon. The autonomous ‘MoonRanger’ rover will be developed by Astrobotic and Carnegie Mellon University and is expected to be on the moon’s surface in 2021 or 2022. The 13 kilogram rover is currently being developed to “provide high fidelity 3D maps of the Moon’s surface in areas such as polar regions and lunar pits. It will demonstrate transformational high-speed, long-range, communication-denied autonomous lunar exploration”.
