The Mario Lemieux Foundation recently pledged to donate $5 million over the next ten years that will be used to construct the Immunotherapy Center in the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. According to an article by the Pittsburgh Business Times, “immunotherapy is is a new and evolving treatment regimen that uses the power of a patient’s own immune cells to defeat cancer in the body. Immunotherapy holds the promise — and is already — to cure a small but growing number of patients at a lesser physical toll than either radiation or chemotherapy”. Dr. Robert Ferris, Director of the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, said these funds “will act as an accelerator” for future funding and medical research in the field of immunotherapy.
